A Pair of Skins (1916)
Up to the time that Prof. Chasebugs received a letter announcing the arrival of Jabbs, the four-flush hunter, Pokes had been the accepted suitor for Ethel's hand. However, once her father, the Professor, hears Jabbs describe the manner in which he killed the ferocious man-eating tiger in the jungles of India, he resolves that Ethel shall belong to no other man. As the Professor is interested in the study of bugs of various kinds, it is only natural that he should fall a victim to Jabbs' stories of his skill as a hunter, so he naturally succumbs to Jabbs' proposition to go hunting. Pokes in the meantime has been practicing up in his efficiency as a marksman much to the discomfort of his two friends who volunteer to hold the target for Pokes, forgets all about the target and shoots his friends instead. When Jabbs, Ethel, the Professor and his wife arrive at the hunting grounds, Jabbs proceeds to give a demonstration of his skill as a marksman and all is well until a bear creeps out from the underbrush and chases the Professor and his family from the place. Jabbs calmly proceeds with his demonstration unmindful of the hurried departure of the Chasebug family until a friendly bug notifies him of the presence of the bear. Once he becomes cognizant of the bear's presence, Jabbs proceeds to break all speed records back to the Chasebug bungalow passing the Chasebug family en route. Arriving at the bungalow, the once mighty hunter rushes up to the roof, where he locks the skylight and peers down upon the family frantically trying to force their way up from the attic in a vain attempt to escape from the pursuing bear. Great, however, is his chagrin when on looking down again he finds Ethel lying contently in the arms of the bear and to his horror the supposed bear is none other than his despised rival, Pokes.
