The city is also known for its sprawling favelas (shanty towns). Its raucous Carnaval festival, featuring parade floats, flamboyant costumes and samba dancers, is considered the world’s largest.

In view of his abdication to the throne of Brazil, this is a moment of deep reflection for D. Pedro I, who ponders the mistakes and successes of his administration since the moment he arrived in the country with his family at the age of 10, in 1808 .
