Amazonas is an enormous state in northwestern Brazil, covered almost entirely by the Amazon rainforest. The capital, Manaus, is a river port with landmarks dating to the late-19th-century rubber boom, including the Amazon Theater, a grand opera house. The city marks the "Meeting of Waters," where the blackwater Rio Negro and the Solimões River merge into the Amazon River.
Belém, capital of the state of Pará, is a port city and gateway to Brazil’s lower Amazon region. By Guajará Bay, the riverfront district Cidade Velha (old town) preserves Portuguese-colonial architecture, including churches, colorful azulejo-tile houses and a 17th-century fortification known as Forte do Presépio. Ver-o-Peso is a vast, open-air market on the water selling Amazonian fish, fruit and handicrafts.
Manaus, on the banks of the Negro River in northwestern Brazil, is the capital of the vast state of Amazonas. It's a major departure point for the surrounding Amazon Rainforest. Just east of the city, the dark Negro River converges with the brown, muddy Solimões River resulting in a striking visual phenomenon called the “Meeting of the Waters.” The combined tributaries form the Amazon River.
Porto Velho is a city in northwest Brazil. On the Madeira River, the Madeira Mamoré Railroad Museum features a vintage locomotive. The Sacred Heart of Jesus Cathedral includes frescoes, stained glass and a ceiling decorated with carved wood. The grand neoclassical President Vargas Palace is nearby. Northeast, the waterways of the Reserva Extrativista do Lago do Cuniã are home to alligators and giant pirarucu fish.
Lima, the capital of Peru, lies on the country's arid Pacific coast. Though its colonial center is preserved, it's a bustling metropolis and one of South America’s largest cities. It's home to the Museo Larco collection of pre-Columbian art and the Museo de la Nación, tracing the history of Peru’s ancient civilizations. The Plaza de Armas and the 16th-century cathedral are the heart of old Lima Centro.
