Philadelphia, Pennsylvania’s largest city, is notable for its rich history, on display at the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall (where the Declaration of Independence and Constitution were signed) and other American Revolutionary sites. Also iconic are the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, immortalized by Sylvester Stallone’s triumphant run in the film "Rocky."
Ocean City is on New Jersey's coastal Jersey Shore. The city has a string of beaches and a boardwalk with shops, eateries and amusement parks. Gillian’s Wonderland Pier offers classic rides like the Giant Wheel. Playland’s Castaway Cove features several roller coasters and themed mini-golf. To the south, Corson’s Inlet State Park, with trails and a boat launch, attracts shorebirds to its dunes and wetlands.
Cape Coast is the capital of the Central Region, in southern Ghana. It’s known for its role in the transatlantic slave trade. Overlooking the Gulf of Guinea, Cape Coast Castle is a large whitewashed fort built by the Swedish in the 17th century. It was later used by the British as a holding prison for slaves. Inside, the Castle Museum has exhibits on pre-colonial local history, the slave trade and traditional crafts.
Accra is the capital of Ghana, on the Atlantic coast of West Africa. Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park honors Ghana’s first president, who helped lead the country to independence. The park contains Nkrumah’s mausoleum and a museum charting his life. Makola Market is the city’s vast, colorful bazaar. Popular seafront spots Labadi Beach and Kokrobite Beach offer golden sand and high-energy nightlife.

American Hunger explores the relationship between personal experience and collective histories. Specifically, the relationship between African American modernity and the history from which it has arrived. Oscillating between Philadelphia and New Jersey in the United States, and Cape Coast and Accra in Ghana, American Hunger, takes a direct approach to montage and composition counterpointing visual dialect lyricism with the concerns of narrative film.
