Plot summary

This film deals with a Roman theme telling the story of Syrra, the slave of Marcellus, and of her infatuation for her master. Madly in love with Marcellus-a love that is unrequited-she scorns the genuine affection of Affrus, a fellow-slave. Shortly after, having attempted to force her attentions on her master, she is ordered to be flogged. Tied to the portals of the house she receives a dose of the knout, until she falls exhausted. Here she is discovered by Affrus, who releases her bonds and carries her to her apartments, where he revives her by the aid of a stimulant. She, however, again spurns his love. She is next given by Marcellus to a guest of his, by whom she is taken away. Yearning still for Marcellus she contrives to escape and returns to him. At his house she is discovered by Affrus, who, burning with jealousy, makes up his mind to be revenged. Seeing Marcellus sleeping on a couch he decides to slay him, and, procuring a dagger, is in the act of carrying his plan into execution when Syrra steps between the slave and his master, and herself receives the dagger. The struggle awakens Marcellus, who then realises that his faithful Syrra has saved his life, and love for her is kindled in his breast. Too late, however, for Syrra almost immediately expires, happy to die for her lord.
