Energetic Smíchov is a business and nightlife hub where shiny office buildings share streets with creative spaces in converted factories. Mural-covered MeetFactory offers a cutting-edge program of exhibitions, theater and concerts, while the glass, waterfront Jazz Dock presents shows by big-name acts. Smíchovská Náplavka riverfront park hosts frequent food festivals.
Cape Town is a port city on South Africa’s southwest coast, on a peninsula beneath the imposing Table Mountain. Slowly rotating cable cars climb to the mountain’s flat top, from which there are sweeping views of the city, the busy harbor and boats heading for Robben Island, the notorious prison that once held Nelson Mandela, which is now a living museum.
Prague, capital city of the Czech Republic, is bisected by the Vltava River. Nicknamed “the City of a Hundred Spires,” it's known for its Old Town Square, the heart of its historic core, with colorful baroque buildings, Gothic churches and the medieval Astronomical Clock, which gives an animated hourly show. Completed in 1402, pedestrian Charles Bridge is lined with statues of Catholic saints.
Andel Exit (2000)
Vladimír Michálek's fourth feature based on a book by Jáchym Topol (who had a hand in writing the script). This film about a drug dealer named Mikes (Jan Cechticky), who lives in Prague and longs to escape his own clichéd life, excels for its raw atmosphere and expressive acting. The movie was shot digitally and then transferred to film, and this became its main artistic attribute.
