Its most recognizable landmark is the Kotoku-in Temple’s Great Buddha, a roughly 13m-high bronze statue still standing after a 15th-century tsunami. Yuigahama Beach on Sagami Bay is a popular surfing spot.

Shimoda is a city on the southeastern Izu peninsula, in Japan’s Shizuoka Prefecture. It’s known for its busy port and hot springs. Beaches include Shirahama, a long sandy stretch with strong surf. Ryōsen-ji temple is where the U.S.-Japan Treaty of Amity and Commerce was signed in 1858.
