Bangkok, Thailand’s capital, is a large city known for ornate shrines and vibrant street life. The boat-filled Chao Phraya River feeds its network of canals, flowing past the Rattanakosin royal district, home to opulent Grand Palace and its sacred Wat Phra Kaew Temple. Nearby is Wat Pho Temple with an enormous reclining Buddha and, on the opposite shore, Wat Arun Temple with its steep steps and Khmer-style spire.
Chiang Mai is a city in mountainous northern Thailand. Founded in 1296, it was capital of the independent Lanna Kingdom until 1558. Its Old City area still retains vestiges of walls and moats from its history as a cultural and religious center. It’s also home to hundreds of elaborate Buddhist temples, including 14th-century Wat Phra Singh and 15th-century Wat Chedi Luang, adorned with carved serpents.
Siem Reap, a resort town in northwestern Cambodia, is the gateway to the ruins of Angkor, the seat of the Khmer kingdom from the 9th–15th centuries. Angkor’s vast complex of intricate stone buildings includes preserved Angkor Wat, the main temple, which is pictured on Cambodia’s flag. Giant, mysterious faces are carved into the Bayon Temple at Angkor Thom.
Poipet is a city in Banteay Meanchey Province in western Cambodia, on the border with Thailand. It’s the main land crossing and transport hub for travel between the cities of Siem Reap and Bangkok. The city is known for its many casinos, which line the main street and the area around the border. To the east, Sisophon is a base for exploring the Banteay Chhmar temple complex, which dates from the Angkor period.
Sioux Falls is a city in South Dakota. The Big Sioux River tumbles over a series of rock faces in Falls Park, which includes an observation tower and the ruins of the 19th-century Queen Bee Mill. The Queen Anne–style Pettigrew Home & Museum has artifacts collected by Senator Richard F. Pettigrew. The Old Courthouse Museum offers exhibits on local history. Southwest, Sertoma Park has a butterfly house and an aquarium.
