County Kilkenny, in southeastern Ireland, is known for its medieval monastic ruins. These include the 12th-century Kells Priory, an Augustinian complex surrounded by fortified walls. The county capital, also called Kilkenny, has more medieval buildings, including Kilkenny Castle, remodelled in Victorian times and set in extensive grounds. St. Canice’s Cathedral has a 9th-century round tower offering panoramic views.

County Meath is just north of Dublin, in eastern Ireland. It’s known for its archaeological sites, especially Brú na Bóinne, in the Boyne Valley. Neolithic monuments at this site include the huge, accessible passage tombs of Newgrange and Knowth. Knowth also contains dozens of stones engraved with prehistoric art. Nearby, the Battle of the Boyne Visitor Centre has trails around the site of this 1690 clash.

Tipperary, in Ireland’s province of Munster, is a landlocked rural county that’s home to mountains, rivers, lakes and farmland. The medieval and Celtic collection of ruins at the Rock of Cashel have sweeping pastoral views. Cahir Castle is an imposing 12th-century fortress sitting on an island in the River Suir. Tipperary's county town, Clonmel, is in the south, and is a gateway for exploring the region.

Waterford, a seaport in southeast Ireland, is the country’s oldest city. It was founded by Vikings in 914 A.D. and parts of its ancient walled core remain. Within Reginald’s Tower, a circa-1003 fortification, the Waterford Museum of Treasures displays local archaeological finds. Famed glass manufacturer Waterford Crystal began here in 1783. Today the company’s facility near the historic district offers factory tours.
