Niigata is a port city on Honshu, Japan’s main island. The Minatopia history museum complex includes heritage buildings like the 19th-century Niigata Customs House. Along the seacoast, the Marinepia Nihonkai aquarium has sea otters and dolphins. Part of the Northern Culture Museum, the Ito Estate was home to a wealthy 1800s family and displays their art collection. South are the hot springs of Iwamuro.
Nagaoka is a city on Japan’s main Honshu Island. In the center, near the Shinano River, the Niigata Prefectural Museum of Modern Art has 20th-century Japanese works and a sculpture garden. Niigata Prefectural Museum of History exhibits prehistoric Jōmon pottery. North of the city, the grand Yahiko Shrine sits at the foot of Mount Yahiko. A cable car ascends to the peak. Southeast are the hot springs of Yomogihira.
Takaoka is a city on the coast of Japan's Honshu Island. The central Takaokakojo Park is home to the ruins of Takaoka Castle, plus water-filled moats and spring cherry blossoms. Nearby, the Takaoka Art Museum shows lacquer work. To the southwest, the Great Buddha is an large bronze statue. Farther south, a grand wooden gate leads to the 17th-century Zuiryū-ji Temple. Traditional houses line the Kanayamachi old town.
