Hotan Prefecture is located in the Tarim Basin region of southwestern Xinjiang, China, bordering the Tibet Autonomous Region to the south and Union Territory of Ladakh and Gilgit-Baltistan to the west.

Xinjiang, an autonomous territory in northwest China, is a vast region of deserts and mountains. It's home to many ethnic minority groups, including the Turkic Uyghur people. The ancient Silk Road trade route linking China and the Middle East passed through Xinjiang, a legacy that can be seen in the traditional open-air bazaars of its oasis cities, Hotan and Kashgar.

Plot summary

40 times more valuable than gold, Jade is found in the dried-up Yurungkash riverbed in China's remote desert region of Xinjiang. Partly observational, partly impressionistic and filmed covertly, China's Wild West describes a day in the life of the Muslim community hoping to strike it rich. Eschewing politics, it portrays the lives, hopes and expectations of a group of simple, spiritual people who - in more ways than might first be obvious - represent us all.
