Chumbo (2022)
For nearly 20 years, residents of the Chumbo quilombola community were used as labor by an alcohol plant, which maintained methods considered analogous to slavery. The Alcoopan case represents the various elements that make up the picture of contemporary slave labor, which is mostly invisible. The film is narrated from the perspective of women who were condemned to "forced" labor simply for being poor and living the rest of their lives with health problems and without assistance. Today, without this plant, the community struggles to get out of the vulnerability zone. Chumbo is a portrait of Brazil, raising profound questions about this reality and how the lack of opportunities in such an unequal country can make the perspective of slave labor dubious.
