Plot summary

Chester Conklin, as the fire chief, clashes with Slim Summerville, police chief. They first match wits as well as strength at a field meet. There is a tug of war as the main event. Slim ties the rope around himself and then anchors to a tree. The strong man of the fire force has been put in a jail on wheels that is drawn by mules. It looks as if the police would make a clean sweep. But they have not reckoned with the crafty Chester. He hands his end of the rope to the strong man, starts up the mules and along come Slim, tree and the whole Keystone police force. The bad blood between the two factions is increased when Chester is found enjoying the society of Slim's wife. Slim, in a rage, threatens to shoot Chester on sight. There is a fire in the house, Chester's wife yells for aid, the gallant police chief hurries to the scene with his trusty men at his heels. Mounting a ladder Chester reaches the room only to find his wife with the obnoxious Slim. Chester leaps at his rival and they rain blows on each other, regardless of the flames around them. The encounter ends in the discomfiture of Chester, who makes a flying exit down the ladder. Then follow more cries for help from the police chief's wife. Finally Slim and the woman jump into nets, after the front of the house has fallen, disclosing them to the shouting multitude below.
