Baden-Baden is a spa town in southwestern Germany’s Black Forest, near the border with France. Its thermal baths led to fame as a fashionable 19th-century resort. Alongside the Oos River, park-lined Lichtentaler Allee is the town’s central promenade. The Kurhaus complex (1824) houses the elegant, Versailles-inspired Spielbank (casino). Its Trinkhalle has a loggia decorated with frescoes and a mineral-water fountain.

Plot summary

German Rhineland wine estate heir Andreas Landsberg has left that business to become a physician and spend several months working in Udaipur, India, where maharajah style luxury still contrast with abject poverty. Now he invites his widowed mother Anna. She hoped for his return but gets invited for his impending wedding with Indian upper class modernist colleague Savita Singh. Andreas's friend Ferdinand Weißenberger, an Austrian her age, takes to her while she wrestles with the shock. And Savita's family wanted to marry her off to a ruthless rich man, who won't give her up.
