Bavaria, officially the Free State of Bavaria, is a state in the southeast of Germany. With an area of 70,550.19 km², it is the largest German state by land area, comprising roughly a fifth of the total land area of Germany.
Berlin, Germany’s capital, dates to the 13th century. Reminders of the city's turbulent 20th-century history include its Holocaust memorial and the Berlin Wall's graffitied remains. Divided during the Cold War, its 18th-century Brandenburg Gate has become a symbol of reunification. The city's also known for its art scene and modern landmarks like the gold-colored, swoop-roofed Berliner Philharmonie, built in 1963.
Brandenburg an der Havel is a German town west of Berlin. It’s known for its Gothic, red-brick buildings, including the 15th-century Old Town Hall. Close by, Brandenburg Cathedral has a chapel with a painted vault, a baroque organ and a museum displaying medieval textiles. The late-medieval St. Paul’s Monastery is home to the Archaeological Museum. Nearby are the ruins of the medieval town wall.
Breddorf is a municipality in the district of Rotenburg, in Lower Saxony, Germany. Breddorf belonged to the Prince-Archbishopric of Bremen, established in 1180.
Klaipėda is a port city in Lithuania, where the Baltic Sea meets the Danė River. The old town features German-style, 18th-century wood-framed buildings. Theater Square, the city’s main gathering spot, is home to the neoclassical Drama Theater. The square’s 1912 Taravos Anikė sculpture pays tribute to a local poet. The waterside Lithuanian Sea Museum includes dolphin shows and maritime exhibits in a 19th-century fort.
Klütz is a town in the Nordwestmecklenburg district, in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Germany. It is situated near the Baltic Sea coast, 22 km northwest of Wismar, and 33 km northeast of Lübeck. It is famous for the manor house Bothmer Castle, located just outside the village.
Lower Saxony is a state in northwest Germany bordering the North Sea. In its capital, Hanover, Herrenhausen Gardens include the baroque Great Garden and English landscape gardens. The Lower Saxony State Museum displays art from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is a state in north Germany. Along the Baltic Sea coast, Usedom island is known for its beaches. On Rügen island, the old steam train Rasender Roland links seaside resorts Binz and Sellin. Also on Rügen is Jasmund National Park and its striking white chalk cliffs, notably the soaring Königsstuhl. Elsewhere on the coast, migrating cranes are drawn to Western Pomerania Lagoon Area National Park.
Vilnius, Lithuania’s capital, is known for its baroque architecture, seen especially in its medieval Old Town. But the buildings lining this district’s partially cobblestoned streets reflect diverse styles and eras, from the neoclassical Vilnius Cathedral to Gothic St. Anne's Church. The 16th-century Gate of Dawn, containing a shrine with a sacred Virgin Mary icon, once guarded an entrance to the original city.

In 1944 many Germans in Eastern Prussia, like Lena von Mahlenberg, daughter of a local aristocrat, believed that Hitler would surrender and spare them from being invaded by the vengeful Russian Red Army. He didn't and they had to flee.
