Marseille, a port city in southern France, has been a crossroads of immigration and trade since its founding by the Greeks circa 600 B.C. At its heart is the Vieux-Port (Old Port), where fishmongers sell their catch along the boat-lined quay. Basilique Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde is a Romanesque-Byzantine church. Modern landmarks include Le Corbusier’s influential Cité Radieuse complex and Zaha Hadid’s CMA CGM Tower.
Provence, a region in southeastern France bordering Italy and the Mediterranean Sea, is known for its diverse landscapes, from the Southern Alps and Camargue plains to rolling vineyards, olive groves, pine forests and lavender fields. To the south is the Côte d'Azur (or French Riviera), where the elegant city of Nice and glamorous resort towns such as Saint-Tropez and Cannes line the coast.
L’Estaque is a charming suburban port with a village vibe. The waterfront is dotted with grand villas and lined with casual bars, seafood eateries and food stalls selling panisse (chickpea fritters). Boats fill the harbor, while the area’s sand and pebble beaches offer city views and are backed by the chalky Chaîne de L’Estaque hills. A low-key Saturday morning market sells produce, clothing and regional crafts.
Ensuès-la-Redonne is a seaside commune in the Bouches-du-Rhône department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte-d'Azur region in Southern France. It is located on the Côte Bleue, 15 km west of Marseille, within the larger Aix-Marseille-Provence Metropolis.
