Tokyo, Japan’s busy capital, mixes the ultramodern and the traditional, from neon-lit skyscrapers to historic temples. The opulent Meiji Shinto Shrine is known for its towering gate and surrounding woods. The Imperial Palace sits amid large public gardens. The city's many museums offer exhibits ranging from classical art (in the Tokyo National Museum) to a reconstructed kabuki theater (in the Edo-Tokyo Museum).

Nagaoka is a city on Japan’s main Honshu Island. In the center, near the Shinano River, the Niigata Prefectural Museum of Modern Art has 20th-century Japanese works and a sculpture garden. Niigata Prefectural Museum of History exhibits prehistoric Jōmon pottery. North of the city, the grand Yahiko Shrine sits at the foot of Mount Yahiko. A cable car ascends to the peak.
