Amapá is a state in northern Brazil bordered by Suriname, French Guiana and the Atlantic Ocean. The Amazon Rainforest covers a great portion of its area, and the Oyapock River forms part of its northern border. In the south, its capital city of Macapá is known for the seaside Fortaleza de São José de Macapá, an 18th-century Portuguese fort, and the Monumento do Marco Zero, an obelisk marking the equator.
Pernambuco is a state in northeast Brazil, on the Atlantic Ocean. Its modern capital, Recife, features a port, old town and popular beach area of Boa Viagem. Offshore, the volcanic archipelago of Fernando de Noronha has a jagged coastline, undeveloped beaches and a marine park. South of Recife, reef-protected Porto de Galinhas beach offers natural pools. North lies Olinda, a colonial town amid lush vegetation.
Alagoas is a small state in northeastern Brazil with a tropical coastline of palm-lined, white-sand beaches, clear lagoons and coral reefs. Maceió, its capital, is home to the popular Pajuçara and Ponta Verde beaches, with hotels, bars and restaurants. Coral reefs fringe the coastline north of Maceió, earning it the nickname Costa dos Corais (Coral Coast).
Brasília, inaugurated as Brazil’s capital in 1960, is a planned city distinguished by its white, modern architecture, chiefly designed by Oscar Niemeyer. Laid out in the shape of an airplane, its “fuselage” is the Monumental Axis, 2 wide avenues flanking a massive park. In the “cockpit” is Praça dos Três Poderes, named for the 3 branches of government surrounding it.
