Plot summary

Onlookers are remarking at how the happy Miller family - mother, father, and their two teenage offspring Kathryn and Harold - seem to have the time and energy to do things together, they heading off on a picnic. Things were not always this way. Rewind a few months. Kathryn and Harold are only thinking about themselves and their own needs and wants often at the expense of others. Mother is exhausted in the housework solely on her shoulders, while father spends all day at work. An off the cuff comment by Harold makes mother think about how their family operates: "If this thing were a business, we'd go bankrupt, but fast." She knows that they should have a comfortable, happy life with their income, but they can't seem to make it last. And they aren't happy in their relationships with each other when things they expect don't materialize. Using a business model, mother suggests they have a plan in how their family should operate in the goal of the good for all: more fun, more leisure and more harmony. In getting the buy-in from everyone else, she not only outlines the end goals but asks for their ideas on the specifics of the parameters, balancing out such items as responsibilities and privileges. They would also need regular evaluations to see how things are progressing, those evaluations also to deal with emergencies, financial or otherwise.
