Ipiales is a small Andean city in western Colombia, near the border with Ecuador. It’s known for its proximity to Las Lajas Sanctuary, a Catholic pilgrimage site. This towering Gothic-style church and its arched bridge span the Guáitara River in a steep-sided gorge southeast of town. Built in the 20th century, they mark the spot where the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared to a mother and her daughter in 1754.

Plot summary

A Colombian farmer and his son are exiled from their village on the high plains. They boy befriends a girl and borrows a little dog to play with, while the father is forced to work in the illegal Amapola (poppy) filed. The two stories intertwine when one day the boy follows his father to work.
