County Galway is on Ireland’s western seaboard. Its eastern areas feature rolling farmland plains. To the west are the raised bog, heathered hills, lakes and mountains of Connemara. Crossed by trails, Connemara National Park has prehistoric megalithic tombs. The park shelters a herd of Connemara ponies, as well as rich birdlife. The county capital, Galway City, is known for its traditional music venues.
Affluent Cottesloe centres on busy Marine Parade, where laid-back cafes and gelato shops overlook a sandy beach that's popular for water sports. Pizza and seafood are served at landmark Indiana Cottesloe Beach restaurant, a former tea house from 1910, while oceanfront pubs with beer gardens host “Sunday Sessions” with live music. Inland, Napoleon Street has hip bakeries, designer jewellers and surf-wear stores.
Perth, capital of Western Australia, sits where the Swan River meets the southwest coast. Sandy beaches line its suburbs, and the huge, riverside Kings Park and Botanic Garden on Mount Eliza offer sweeping views of the city. The Perth Cultural Centre houses the state ballet and opera companies, and occupies its own central precinct, including a theatre, library and the Art Gallery of Western Australia.
