After a turnoff first meeting, groom Bill's best man Leo Edwards finds himself 'matched' by the couple to pregnant bride Eve Turner's sister and bridesmaid, Nelly Stuart, and Nelly unpleasantly surprised her divorced father, Bristol botany professor Tony Stuart, by inviting her mother Sofia Mendez-Stuart, who left him with the girls returning to native Colombia years ago. They meet again at the couple's baby Jamie's christening, and later after both Bill perishes in a car accident leaving Eve comatose, when the testament appoints the startled 'duo' guardians. They accept and move together at Leo's stately home for now, expecting Eve to recover, despite conflicting career priorities : acting (god)father Leo as drone operating rising star in the local TV station, aiming for a surf reporting shot, Nelly as Olympic fencer, trained by Olympic veteran and sport agency owner and father of three adults Patrick Cameron, who took her into his grand home, also with a romantic interest and opposes her godmother priority elsewhere. Sofia returns to Cornwall mobbing in with Tony to take turns at Eve's sickbed and assist Nelly. Truth time arrives when Eve dies, Jamie must either be given up for fostering or adopted full-time by Leo and Nelly, who meanwhile had an affair, which were incompatible with their own ambitions.
