Plot summary

In early 2011, when organized crime joined forces with the logging industry and certain government agencies to gain joint ownership of ancient sacred forests easily and inexpensively, the indigenous people of the Cherán region in the Mexican state of Michoacán rioted and rebelled using sticks, stones, and Molotov cocktails against the local narco-government. They occupied and assumed control of local offices, supplies, and commerce, abolished political parties, and disbanded both municipal and state police. They then re-established a traditional form of self-sufficient government, complete with its own council of elders, community police, and an armed forest protection team known as the "Guarda Bosques." The documentary sheds light on these events.
