In 2012, northern Mali fell to armed jihadist groups. The French-led Operation Serval liberated the occupied territory, but the Malian crisis was deeper than that. It is first and foremost the story of a failure, that of the Malian state, which was left to arrangements and corruption, but also of the international community that supported it. The Malian democracy so often cited as an example was only an illusion; it became a prey for the jihadists. A descent into hell that led the international partners, with France at the forefront, to become involved in an endless conflict that is now spreading to neighboring countries.
