Private detective Hartwig Seeler receives an unusual assignment from his former colleague Tascha. The police officer fears the release of the felon Gerald Metzner, with whom she shares a traumatic memory: As a hostage, she spent 36 excruciating hours in his hands. To be safe from Metzner, Tascha wants to go into hiding with Seeler's help. She wants to start a new life on the Maltese island of Gozo - preferably with Seeler, for whom she has always felt more than a quiet friendship. For the ex-police officer, who has not yet come to terms with the loss of his wife Maria, the advances come completely unexpected. He senses a deep vulnerability in her and something darkly mysterious that she keeps to herself. When Tascha disappears before the planned dive and Metzner's body is found, Seeler suspects that he is being led astray himself. He doesn't tell his ex-colleague Lasse, who heads the police investigation, about it. Seeler travels to Gozo on his own. In his search he is accompanied by the painful question: How do you deal with people when you know that you can be mistaken about them?
