Beginning of 20th century. The opera singer Marie Toulinguet has lost her voice. Haunted by souvenirs of her childhood in Newfoundland, she remembers an Indian doll made by the servant Shanawdithit, the last Beothuck Indian. A mysterious link is restored between her and the dead Indian woman.
