Hamburg, a major port city in northern Germany, is connected to the North Sea by the Elbe River. It's crossed by hundreds of canals, and also contains large areas of parkland. Near its core, Inner Alster lake is dotted with boats and surrounded by cafes. The city's central Jungfernstieg boulevard connects the Neustadt (new town) with the Altstadt (old town), home to landmarks like 18th-century St. Michael’s Church.
Bruges, the capital of West Flanders in northwest Belgium, is distinguished by its canals, cobbled streets and medieval buildings. Its port, Zeebrugge, is an important center for fishing and European trade. In the city center’s Burg square, the 14th-century Stadhuis (City Hall) has an ornate carved ceiling. Nearby, Markt square features a 13th-century belfry with a 47-bell carillon and 83m tower with panoramic views.
Koksijde is a town and a municipality in Belgium. It is located on the North Sea coast in the southwest of the Flemish province of West Flanders. The municipality comprises apart from Koksijde, the villages of Oostduinkerke, Saint-Idesbald and Wulpen.
Blankenberge is a Belgian coastal town with a long beach and promenade, plus a busy marina. The Belgium Pier stretches out into the North Sea, offering views of the seafront. The town is known for its art nouveau architecture. The Belle Epoque Center, in several restored seaside villas, explores the area’s history from 1870 to 1914. Nearby is the Old Town Hall, built in Flemish-Renaissance style in the 17th century.
De Panne is a Belgian town on the North Sea, close to the French border. It’s known for its beach and for nature reserves like Westhoek, where dunes and grasslands shelter migratory birds and Highland cattle. The top of Kykhill Dune Park offers views of the century-old Dumont Quarter and the sea. De Panne is at one end of the Coastal Tram, which runs the entire length of the Belgian coast, east to Knokke-Heist.
Middelkerke is a municipality located in the Belgian province of West Flanders, on the North Sea, west of Ostend. The municipality comprises the villages of Leffinge, Lombardsijde, Mannekensvere, Middelkerke proper, Schore, Sint-Pieters-Kapelle, Slijpe, Westende and Wilskerke.
Veurne is a city in northwestern Belgium, near the French border. The Market Square is dominated by the Belfry, which combines late Gothic, Renaissance and baroque elements. Also on the square, the town hall houses the Free Fatherland Discovery Center, which recounts how the city avoided German invasion during WWI. Nearby is the Church of St. Walburga, with its tall stone interior columns and stained-glass windows.
