Quito, Ecuador's capital, sits high in the Andean foothills at an altitude of 2,850m. Constructed on the foundations of an ancient Incan city, it’s known for its well-preserved colonial center, rich with 16th- and 17th-century churches and other structures blending European, Moorish and indigenous styles. These include the cathedral, in the Plaza Grande square, and ultra-ornate Compañia de Jesús Jesuit church.
Pichincha is a volcano-rich province in north-central Ecuador. It's home to Quito, the country's capital with colonial churches like the gilded Iglesia de la Compañia de Jesús and imposing Iglesia de San Francisco. Towering over Quito, the active Pichincha Volcano has trails and a cable car to an overlook. To Quito's east, Cayambe Coca Ecological Reserve has hot springs and the snow-capped Cayambe Volcano.
Impulso (2009)
Jessica is a rebellious 17-year-old living with her aunt and grandmother in Quito. Her absent mother has stopped sending money, causing rifts within the family. When she decides to search for the father she's never met, she ends up in the country home of her father's brother and his wife, where the mirrors are always covered and the air is thick with fog and mystery. An atmospheric blend of magical realism and traditional horror, this film was a triumph for the Ecuadorian film industry, winning the Grand Prix at the Toulouse Film Festival.
