L' oreille de la mer (The ear of the sea) (2023)
The film reexamines the concept of the ancient Greek myth of transformation in the context of a dystopian "perfect" society, in which true love is considered an act of anarchy and undermining the rules. Anyone who breaks the rules and falls in love is punished on their 25th birthday by shedding their human status and being transformed into a plant or animal of their choice. Transfiguration abolishes the historicity of the human body and the limits imposed upon it, as man puts on the body of the species into which he was transfigured and acquires the status and eternity of the species into which he was transfigured. The film tries through allegory to highlight the existing societal fallout of desire, and the discipline/self-punishment and guilt complex. In the film, marriage is an occasion to highlight the stereotypical rules and at the same time the social musts that run through a person's life from birth to death. The work relates to general forms of repression or self-control of a bodily desire, but also to deviation from what is considered normal (body).
