Santiago de Compostela is the capital of northwest Spain’s Galicia region. It’s known as the culmination of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route, and the alleged burial site of the Biblical apostle St. James. His remains reputedly lie within the Catedral de Santiago de Compostela, consecrated in 1211, whose elaborately carved stone facades open onto grand plazas within the medieval walls of the old town.
Ciudad Lineal is a corridor of suburbs edging onto vast, forested Cuña Verde Park, with an amphitheater for outdoor concerts and an off-road bike track. Nearby La Almudena Cemetery is a sprawl of tombs housing the remains of Spanish poets, rock stars, and national leaders, while Museo Africano exhibits tribal masks and musical instruments. Mainstream malls, family eateries, and casual tapas bars dot the area.

Gerardo Roquer's father sends his son, who is much more interested in nightlife and vaudeville chorus girls than in textbooks, from Madrid to the University of Santiago de Compostela to force him to study. Gerardo ends up staying at the "Casa de la Troya" boardinghouse, where he befriends other students and falls in love with the beautiful Carmiña Castro. But her aunt and uncle don't approve of their love; they prefer the foppish Octavio (to whom they owe a debt).
