The City of Brussels is the largest municipality and historical centre of the Brussels-Capital Region, as well as the capital of the Flemish Region and Belgium. Paris, France's capital, is a major European city and a global center for art, fashion, gastronomy and culture. Its 19th-century cityscape is crisscrossed by wide boulevards and the River Seine. Beyond such landmarks as the Eiffel Tower and the 12th-century, Gothic Notre-Dame cathedral, the city is known for its cafe culture and designer boutiques along the Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré.

Residential Saint-Gilles is known for its indie galleries and art nouveau buildings, including the Horta Museum, with stained glass and ceramics by Victor Horta. Sunday’s vast Midi Market at Brussels-South Railway Station sells everything from plants to clothing and exotic spices. The Museum of the Gueuze, in the nearby Cantillon brewery, tells the story of the city’s unique spontaneously fermented beers.

Waterloo is a town south of Brussels, in Belgium. It’s known as the site of the final defeat of Emperor Napoleon I, in 1815. South of town, overlooking the battlefield, the Lion’s Mound is an artificial hill topped by a cast-iron lion. At its foot is a rotunda housing the Panorama of the Battle, a vast circular painting. Nearby, the Memorial 1815 is an underground center illustrating the battle’s historic importance.
