Plot summary

The Tragedy of King Christophe is a play depicting the tragic destiny of a man and a country. It describes the struggle of the Haitian people for their freedom, but also the fight led by a politician who wanted to restore the greatness of his country. The story begins after the Haitian revolution. Once independence was won and the reign of Jean-Jacques Dessalines ended, Henri Christophe was appointed President of the Republic by the Senate. He will refuse this title, will found a kingdom in the North of which he will be the king. But lacking in moderation, he pushed the people towards extreme and cruel working conditions. Leading them to revolt, King Christophe took his own life. This piece shows the reconstruction and the quest for recognition of a country stigmatized by its colonial past.
