An eastern district of Helsinki, Herttoniemi is a residential and commercial area flanked on 3 sides by Gulf of Finland inlets. It’s home to sandy Tuorinniemi Beach, and many leafy parks with walking trails, along with quaint cafes and restaurants, some on the waterfront. The Kivinokka Summer Theater is popular for its outdoor performances. There are also shops, restaurants, and the stately Herttoniemi Manor Museum.
Quiet harborside Katajanokka is known for elegant art nouveau buildings, the gold-domed, red-brick Uspenski Cathedral and upscale seafood restaurants. Icebreakers dock on the north shore, and 19th-century warehouse Wanha Satama hosts markets and nautical exhibits. The Allas Sea Pool is a busy outdoor swimming and sauna complex. Overlooking the harbor, SkyWheel Helsinki offers panoramic views of the city.
Civita di Bagnoregio is a hilltop village in central Italy. It’s accessed via a pedestrian bridge from the nearby ticket office in Bagnoregio village. The Porta Santa Maria gateway was built by the Etruscans. Founded in the 7th century, the Romanesque San Donato Church sits in the main square. Nearby is the Geological and Landslides Museum, whose exhibits document projects to shore up the village's eroding hillside.
Helsinki, Finland’s southern capital, sits on a peninsula in the Gulf of Finland. Its central avenue, Mannerheimintie, is flanked by institutions including the National Museum, tracing Finnish history from the Stone Age to the present. Connected to the mainland by a small bridge, the island of Seurasaari is scattered with old wooden buildings comprising an open-air museum.
