The French Riviera (or Côte d'Azur) is the Mediterranean coast of southeastern France. It includes famously glamorous beach resorts such as Saint-Tropez and Cannes, and the independent microstate of Monaco. A health retreat in the 18th century, the area later attracted aristocrats, artists and the 1960s "jet set." Today it’s an established holiday destination, with paths connecting many coastal villages and towns.
Paris, France's capital, is a major European city and a global center for art, fashion, gastronomy and culture. Its 19th-century cityscape is crisscrossed by wide boulevards and the River Seine. Beyond such landmarks as the Eiffel Tower and the 12th-century, Gothic Notre-Dame cathedral, the city is known for its cafe culture and designer boutiques along the Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré.
Var is a department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region of southeastern France. In the south, its long Mediterranean coast includes the French Riviera, where glamorous resort towns such as Saint-Tropez are known for their beaches, shopping and nightlife. To the west is the resort of Hyères, with a medieval castle. It’s the gateway to the Golden Islands, such as Porquerolles, part of Port Cros National Park.

Nearby is the modernist arts center, Villa Noailles, set in a 1920s building with gardens. Salt marshes on the Giens peninsula attract scores of waterbirds. Just offshore, Porquerolles is one of the Golden Isles, a group of islands with beaches, trails and underwater shipwrecks.
