Alcalá de Henares is a city in central Spain, northeast of Madrid. It’s known for the University of Alcalá, which occupies 16th-century buildings in the old town. These include the Paraninfo, a hall with an intricately patterned Mudejar ceiling, where the King of Spain presents the annual Cervantes literary prize. Nearby, the Cervantes Birthplace Museum is the former home of the celebrated author of “Don Quixote.”
Chinchón is a town, southeast of Madrid, in central Spain. It’s known for its hilltop houses and medieval Plaza Mayor, circled by buildings with wooden balconies. The Torre del Reloj (Clock Tower) is all that remains of the 14th-century Nuestra Señora de Gracia Church. Museo Etnológico La Posada houses traditional farming tools and machinery. To the south are the remains of the 15th-century Castillo de los Condes.
Cadalso de los Vidrios is a municipality the Community of Madrid, Spain. Located in the southwest of the region, it lies on the spurs of the Sistema Central. It is noted by its granite quarries. The municipality covers an area of 47.64 km². As of 2018, it has a population of 3,049.
San Pedro Manrique is a municipality in the province of Soria, Castile and León, Spain. As of 2009, it had 626 inhabitants. Since the mid-nineteenth century this municipality has aggregated smaller villages. There is a deposit of lead in the municipality.
Gotarrendura is a municipality located in the province of Ávila, Castile and León, Spain. According to the 2011 census, the municipality had a population of 173 inhabitants. The parents of St. Teresa of Ávila married in the village and it has been suggested that the saint was born there.
Essaouira is a port city and resort on Morocco’s Atlantic coast. Its medina (old town) is protected by 18th-century seafront ramparts called the Skala de la Kasbah, which were designed by European engineers. Old brass cannons line the walls, and there are ocean views. Strong "Alizée" trade winds make the city’s crescent beach popular for surfing, windsurfing and kitesurfing.
Safi is a port city on Morocco’s Atlantic coast. Ksar El Bahr, a 16th-century fortress built by Portuguese colonizers, is on the waterfront. In the old town, food and craft stalls line the Rue du Souq. Nearby, the National Museum of Ceramics is in another Portuguese-built fort. The centerpiece of the collection is decorated local pottery, created in workshops in the hillside Colline des Potiers quarter.
Toledo is an ancient city set on a hill above the plains of Castilla-La Mancha in central Spain. The capital of the region, it’s known for the medieval Arab, Jewish and Christian monuments in its walled old city. It was also the former home of Mannerist painter El Greco. The Moorish Bisagra Gate and the Sol Gate, in Mudéjar style, open into the old quarter, where the Plaza de Zocodover is a lively meeting place.
