Kostroma is a riverside city in western Russia. In the center, the 19th-century Fire Tower overlooks huge Susaninskaya Square and houses a firefighting museum. Year 1921. Young teacher Liza Zhuravleva is arrested for organizing a violent anti-Soviet riot in Yaroslavl. She is forced to start her rebellion against the revolution by a personal tragedy. Just before the World War I, Liza's fiancé was sent to the frontline as a common soldier. As a result, she had to marry an elderly captain. The fragile girl has to face the challenges of war and revolution.
