Plot summary

In Rocksmouth, England, a German appears who is supposed to dig up a wreck on behalf of NATO, which wants to build a naval base here. This wreck is not only associated with terrible memories for the diver Bill Smith. Twenty years ago, in September 1942, the "Princess of India", which had sailed to Canada with a children's transport, was sunk by a German U-boat. 58 people, mostly children, died. The submarine commander's name was Eberhard Wedel and he is the German who now wants to raise the wreck. Bill Smith is one of the survivors. He has just got engaged to Bessy, who wants to draw a line under this event. But Bill can't believe that Wedel's guilt should go unpunished. The next day Wedel is fished dead out of the sea. Suspicion falls on Bill. The case is rolled out in court.
