Helsinki, Finland’s southern capital, sits on a peninsula in the Gulf of Finland. Its central avenue, Mannerheimintie, is flanked by institutions including the National Museum, tracing Finnish history from the Stone Age to the present. Also on Mannerheimintie are the imposing Parliament House and Kiasma, a contemporary art museum. Ornate red-brick Uspenski Cathedral overlooks a harbor.
Set along the northeastern outskirts of Helsinki, Itäkeskus is a busy neighborhood known for being home to the vast Itis shopping mall, one of the largest of its kind in the country with more than 120 stores. There’s a popular public pool, along with regular performances at the Cultural Center Stoa. The district also has laid-back restaurants, as well as serene parks offering walking trails.
