Plot summary
The story of a former small-town beauty who had a succession of lovers from the officers of the local garrison. The news flashes through the town that Lieutenant Bartl has shot himself because of an unhappy love. At first Erna accepts the news cynically, as he was the only one who resisted her. But then she begins to believe that her relationship with him, and perhaps his with her, was the deepest of all flirtations, and she styles herself as a widow.
