Tokyo, Japan’s busy capital, mixes the ultramodern and the traditional, from neon-lit skyscrapers to historic temples. The opulent Meiji Shinto Shrine is known for its towering gate and surrounding woods. The Imperial Palace sits amid large public gardens. The city's many museums offer exhibits ranging from classical art (in the Tokyo National Museum) to a reconstructed kabuki theater (in the Edo-Tokyo Museum).
Paper City (2021)
Just after midnight on March 10, 1945, the U.S. launched an air attack on eastern Tokyo, which left more than 100,000 people dead and destroyed a quarter of the city. Unlike their loved ones, Hiroshi Hoshino, Michiko Kiyooka and Minoru Tsukiyama emerged from the bombings alive. Now in their twilight years, they wish for nothing more than recognition and reparations for those who, like them, had been indelibly harmed by the war-but the Japanese government and even their fellow citizens seem reluctant to acknowledge the past.
