Buenos Aires is Argentina’s big, cosmopolitan capital city. Its center is the Plaza de Mayo, lined with stately 19th-century buildings including Casa Rosada, the iconic, balconied presidential palace. Other major attractions include Teatro Colón, a grand 1908 opera house with nearly 2,500 seats, and the modern MALBA museum, displaying Latin American art.
Patagonia is a region encompassing the vast southernmost tip of South America, shared by Argentina and Chile, with the Andes Mountains as its dividing line. Esquel is an Argentinean town in the foothills of the Andes Mountains. It’s known for being the southernmost stop on La Trochita, a narrow-gauge steam train that once ran for more than 400km through Patagonia. West of town lies Los Alerces National Park, home to forests, lakes, waterfalls and rare pudu deer. Nearby is La Hoya Mountain, a habitat for the camel-like guanaco with views across the valley.
Gaiman is a riverside town in northeast Patagonia, Argentina. The Regional Historical Museum, housed in the old railway station, documents the lives of the Welsh settlers who colonized the area in the 19th century. There are several Welsh Protestant churches, including Bethel Chapel. The town is dotted with traditional teahouses serving pastries and torta negra, a local twist on traditional Welsh fruitcake.
Las Plumas is a village in Chubut Province, Argentina. Located in the valle de los Mártires, it is the head town of the Mártires Department. It was established in 1921, and from 1928 to 1961 the main station of the Central Chubut Railway, Estación Alto de Las Plumas, was in use in the village.
Trelew is an Argentinean city in northeastern Patagonia. Welsh immigrants who arrived in the 1880s left their legacy in buildings like the simple, red-brick Moriah Chapel. In the former railway station, the Pueblo de Luis Museum has artifacts from Welsh settlers and local indigenous people. The Egidio Feruglio Paleontological Museum features exhibits on Patagonian dinosaurs. Nearby, Gaiman town has Welsh teahouses.
