Plot summary

Marguerite and Sophie de la Tour, two women rejected by the society of their time, have taken shelter on the Ile de France (now Mauritius). They both give birth to a child, Sophie to a baby girl she names Virginie and Marguerite to Paul, a baby boy. The two children are brought up together and grow like brother and sister amidst the luscious nature of the island, far from the class prejudices prevailing in France. As time goes by, Virginie changes into a beautiful young lady while Paul turns into a young man. Brotherly love gives way to love tout court...
