Plot summary
The old lawyer and his young daughter Ludmila, who has apparently already missed her chance to marry, live with a greedy and scheming landlady. Her elder son Nikolai is a great flamender, wandering the bars at night, where he loses large sums in bets and cards. When one day he sends a message to his mother asking her to lend him money, the woman becomes hardened. But Ludmila, who secretly loves him, decides to help him. To get money for him, she takes an important note from her father. At this moment, the last vestiges of decency are awakened in Nikolai.
