Shiraga oni Filming Locations

One of Nikkatsu's first kaiki-eiga ("weird films") after their 1912 formation, Shirage Oni is a tale of man who returns from the grave and possesses the body of another. The film is based on an horror-mystery story by Kuroiwa Shuroku, who in turn adapted his tale from Marie Corelli's 1886 novel Vendetta!. Another 1912 Nikkatsu mystery film deriving from a literary (as opposed to theatrical) source was Yurei To ("The Ghost Tower"), from a newspaper serial published in 1899 which also had its origins in Western literature. Both texts were later reworked by the erotic-grotesque-mystery author Edogawa Rampo. and subsequently re-filmed in the 1940s.
