A bustling ultra-Orthodox neighborhood, Geula is home to a mainly Haredi Jewish population whose modestly dressed members patronize the cozy shops and kosher restaurants lining Malkei Israel Street and nearby residential lanes. Many yeshivas and synagogues are sprinkled throughout the district. To the east, serene Arzei Ha-Bira Garden draws families to its playground, flower beds and tree-shaded lawns.

Home to ultra-Orthodox Haredi and Hasidic Jews, Mea She'arim is an insular, old neighborhood whose narrow streets evoke the feel of Eastern Europe's shtetls. Locals clad in traditional attire worship in the neighborhood's many synagogues, buy everyday items in old-fashioned shops, and dine out at kosher eateries and bakeries. Costumes are worn during Purim, while bonfires are lit for the Lag Baomer holiday.

Ein Kerem is a charming hillside village famed for its centuries-old holy sites. These include the Church of St. John the Baptist, containing a cave said to be the saint’s birthplace, and Mary’s Spring, where the Virgin Mary is believed to have drunk. Dotting the village’s narrow streets are galleries and shops selling hand-painted tiles and jewelry, plus quaint cafes and stylish Mediterranean restaurants.
