Charlotte is a major city and commercial hub in North Carolina. Its modern city center (Uptown) is home to the Levine Museum of the New South, which explores post–Civil War history in the South, and hands-on science displays at Discovery Place. Uptown is also known for the NASCAR Hall of Fame, which celebrates the sport of auto racing through interactive exhibits and films.

Gainesville is a city in northern Florida. It's known for the University of Florida. Set on the sprawling campus, the Florida Museum of Natural History houses fossils and ethnographic exhibits. It includes the Butterfly Rainforest, home to hundreds of free-flying butterflies and birds. Harn Museum of Art has a huge collection of Asian and African works. The Matheson History Museum has a vintage postcard collection.

Los Angeles is a sprawling Southern California city and the center of the nation’s film and television industry. Near its iconic Hollywood sign, studios such as Paramount Pictures, Universal and Warner Brothers offer behind-the-scenes tours. On Hollywood Boulevard, TCL Chinese Theatre displays celebrities’ hand- and footprints, the Walk of Fame honors thousands of luminaries and vendors sell maps to stars’ homes.

The South Side is a large, diverse area with historic districts, student hangouts, and residential blocks lined with row houses. It holds a key place in African-American history, with writers, musicians, and politicians, including Barack Obama, among its former residents. Leafy Hyde Park has beaux arts mansions near the Gothic-style University of Chicago. The Oriental Institute shows its famous Near East collection.
