Cantagalo, formerly spelled Cantagallo, is a city located in the east-central area of Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. The population is 20,168 in an area of 749 km². Its elevation is 391 m.
Rocinha is a favela in Brazil, located in Rio de Janeiro's South Zone between the districts of São Conrado and Gávea. Rocinha is built on a steep hillside overlooking Rio de Janeiro, and is located about one kilometre from a nearby beach. Most of the favela is on a very steep hill, with many trees surrounding it.
Surfing favela (2006)
"Surfing Favela" was shot with the aid of the communities of Cantagalo and Rocinha; the latter, with its 250,000 inhabitants, is considered the biggest slum (Favela) in Rio de Janeiro. The documentary richly portrays the daily tasks of a group of surfers that helps the youth of their own community to discover in surfing, a direct bridge to freedom and nature.
