Instead of his wife's death through his dissipation and neglect bringing Jack Moreland to his senses, he descends further and deserts their daughter Clara, whose uncle Harold Moreland takes her in and brings her up in ignorance of her father's existence. A man of means, Harold gives Clara every advantage and she becomes a talented, accomplished your lady and gets engaged to Percival Summers. After 17 years Jack Moreland makes himself known to his daughter; shocked and horrified, she shuns him. Percival, shocked at the prospect of having such a father-in-law, breaks their engagement. Percival's brother Edward has always been in love with Clara, and when his brother gives her up, he declares his love for her, and being a good-hearted fellow, he persuades her to help her father make a better man of himself, if it's at all possible.
