Lawrence is a city in northeast Kansas. On the University of Kansas campus, the Spencer Museum of Art has a large collection of contemporary and indigenous art. The KU Natural History Museum has dinosaur fossils, live insects and a honeybee colony. South, sprawling Baker Wetlands is home to hundreds of bird species. West of the city, trail-lined Clinton State Park has deer, plus bass and catfish in Clinton Lake.

Plot summary

Already big for his age, older teen Chick Allen hangs around younger kids so that he can both bully them and get them to do his dirty deeds, the younger kids feeling powerless to do anything about him but comply. Chick's classmates are planning on holding a picnic, and while they don't really like him in his distant manner toward them, they want to be inclusive in inviting him to the event. They learn through the grapevine that Chick plans to use the kids to ruin the picnic, including stealing all the food. Chick's classmates have to decide what to do upon learning this information, and Chick, not knowing that they know, will ultimately have to decide what to do in turn.
