The Chemist's Mistake (1910)
Mrs. Jones' cough has been very troublesome, but money is very short and little Dolly is sent by her father to induce that kind old Mr. Burrows, the neighboring chemist, to let them have a bottle of soothing syrup mixture on trust. Off she goes and succeeds in getting the syrup: the bottle falls on the ground, is smashed and the whole of the contents spilled. Now after little Dolly's departure from the chemist's shop Mr. Burrows' assistant discovers that the wrong bottle has been given to the child and instead of the medicine it was a bottle of poison. Running out into the street, the man demands of passersby if they have seen a child carrying a bottle, but without success, and returns to the nearby distraught old gentleman, who sends him out into the street again in a vain search for the child. Mr. Burrows, left alone, realizes to the full extent his awful mistake and is in the act of placing a revolver to his head, when at that moment little Dolly comes in with tears in her eyes, begging for another bottle of the supposed medicine. Hardly realizing the good news, the surprised child is assured of another bottle and the old gentleman starts off with the child to her home, where he himself pours out the true syrup and to the surprise and joy of little Dolly's parents he leaves a banknote in the child's hands.
